Imperador Dos CaracoisWe drove to the main square in Estremoz, prked in the giant public parking lot. We then walked to our restaurant of choice, Venda Azul. The waiter told us that they were fully booked. We made a reservation for the following night. We tried to give our name, but he indicated that he would remember. We walked back towards the square to another restaurant that we had seen, but it was not open. The owner of the store next door told us that they may open at 8 or 8:30 or maybe not open at all. We walked the other way and saw Imperador Dos Caracois. There were several groups of men and one coupe sitting outside drinking beer and eating snacks. We sat at one of the empty tables and a young man of about sixteen gave us menus. He only spoke a few words of English. We settled on a codfish cassarole and a grilled sardine plate with a pitcher of house white wine. As we waited, we watched our neighbors drink beer after beer. Most of the tables were snacking on bowls of tiny snails. They looked and smelled delicious. We were going to order some when our meals arrived. They were huge. Either dish would have been enough for the two of us. I am a big eater snd am not exagerating. Not only were the portions large, they were very good. In all it was a good dinner in an entertaining atmosphere at good price, 20 Euros.
